Hello & welcome!
This is my personal blog, where I record my own reflections on Korean food from hearty meats to delicious vegetable dishes, as well as sweet desserts for home cooks.
I am a native of Seoul, Korea, living in New York City. I specialize in the art of simple culinary creations from the heart of my home kitchen. Following my training at the Institute of Culinary Education in 2009, I refined my craft at some of New York’s finest Michelin starred restaurants including Jean Georges, Gilt and Adour. Prior to my culinary path, I worked in the finance field for many years, including earning an MBA from the University of Chicago.
In 2012, I began my career as an independent culinary instructor. I focus on bringing simplicity to Korean cooking and have been invited to teach at the Korea Society, Natural Gourmet Institute, Whole Foods Bowery Culinary Center, Jewish Community Center and other select kitchens in New York City. Along the way, I've taught cooking classes privately, trained young minds in basic culinary skills in job training programs and done cooking demos at public events. When I'm not teaching, working for a catering company keeps me on my toes in the professional kitchen setting. That means anything from leading cocktail parties of 100 guests to doing whatever is required of me to serve a formal dinner for 1,000 people.
Outside of the kitchen, I am an enthusiast of Korean culture all-around. My articles about hidden Korean gems in New York City have appeared on The Korea Times, The Korea Herald and Yonhap News. I also translate Korean dramas, with recent titles including ‘The Golden Empire (황금의 제국),' 'Emergency Couple (응급남녀),' and 'Angel Eyes (엔젤 아이즈).'
Recently, my worlds came together and I started 'Cooking with Shin' with DramaFever where I teach how to make dishes featured in Asian dramas. You can find the cooking show page on the DramaFever site and the episode collection on DramaFever's YouTube channel. You will also find embedded videos and corresponding recipes on this blog, too. I'd love to hear what you think!
Thank you for visiting my blog!
