Last Thursday was a beautiful day in New York, midday temperature rising to almost 70F/21C. It felt like the first real spring day. What made it really great was that I had the day off. ^_^
So as soon as I was done with breakfast, I started preparing for my lunch picnic. WIth a bag of tiny dried anchovies (멸치; myeol chi) and leftover chervil I found, I made kimbap (김밥). Brown rice was mixed with sweet rice to be cooked in the rice cooker. Anchovies were toasted first, then mixed in gochujang. Egg whites and yolks were cooked separately. Chervil, a delicate herb with lemony-licorice flavor, would add a refreshing bite.
Then I headed to Central Park and ate kimbap at one of my favorite spots.
After lunch, I walked around...
...and found this bubble guy making giant bubbles!
Right outside of the park on 5th Ave, I caught the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Then a coffee break at Via Quadronno
In light of what's happened in Japan, everything seems so trivial and so precious at the same time. A gorgeous spring day like this - when I can pack my own kimbap, head out to Central Park and walk around, and even catch a parade - was an unexpected present.
